Topics to study

Chapter 7

  1. explain the cell theory
  2. distinguish between eukaryotes and prokaryotes (what organisms have them? what structures do they have or lack?)
  3. Describe the structure and function of and be able to identify the following: mitochondria, nucleus, cell wall, cell membrane, smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, Golgi apparatus, chloroplast
  4. Distinguish between and be able to identify a plant and an animal cell
  5. Describe the structure and function of the cell membrane
  6. Describe the structure of the phospholipid and explain the significance of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic sides
  7. Compare and contrast: active transport, passive transport, simple diffusion, osmosis, facilitated diffusion, endocytosis, exocytosis
  8. Describe what would happen to a cell placed in a hypotonic, hypertonic and isotonic solution

Chapter 23

  1. Compare the movement of water (and dissolved minerals) and sugars through the plant
  2. Compare and contrast xylem and phloem
  3. Define transpiration and describe the factors that influence the rate of transpiration
  4. What properties of water drive the process of transpiration?

Chapter 37

  1. List the components of the mammalian (or human) circulatory system
  2. Describe the 2 circuits of blood: pulmonary & systemic circuit
  3. Describe the overall structure of the heart and trace the basic path of blood through the heart
