Biology Lab Report:  Grape expectations

Your lab report is a formal science paper.  It should be typed and double-spaced.  Divide the paper into the sections described below with the subheadings as shown.  Write clear sentences, use a spell check and make drawings, tables and graphs neat and legible.  No title pages or report covers, please.

1. Prediction.                        State the prediction and EXPLAIN a little about your thought process

(example:  The grape will lose mass because water will move out into the surrounding solution.)

2. Methods.*                          Describe the materials and methods.  Drawings may be helpful.  Describe how data was measured & recorded. If written correctly, another person could follow your method like a recipe and recreate your experiment.

3. Observations.*              1) Organize data into a data table.

2) In a paragraph, SUMMARIZE the data.  Calculate the PERCENTAGE of original mass lost or gained.

4. Discussion.                       1) Do your results support your prediction? Why did your grapes lose or gain mass (or not)?

2) Which solution was hypertonic, hypotonic and isotonic? Draw a picture of each of the 3 grapes and demonstrate the hypotonic, hypertonic and isotonic solutions. In your pictures show the movement of water across the membrane and the concentration gradient of sugar.

5. Analysis.                      Describe any conditions that might have affected

your results.  Describe how you could change or improve your experimental design.

*Use the past tense and the passive voice for these sections.
